Eva went down to England to race over 5000m on the river Tyne from Scotswood to Newburn in a coxless quad with Gill Prescott from Duham and Ailie Ord and Liz Davidson from SPRC. The conditions were sunny (in the first division), but cold, specially on the start and a slight headwind!
rutherford
In the 1st Dev. the quad was the fastest WIM2 4x in 17:36.4min and 44th place overall (out of 106 boats) including men's and women's 8's.
In the 2nd Dev. the tide, the flow of the river and the wind were against everyone therefore the times were slower. The quad rowed as a  W veteran D quad in 20:47.5 (19:36.5 with a handicap) and won the D/F category.
Tom Claxton, rowing for Edinburgh University at the moment were the fastest crew in the second division in 16:56.7 - Well done!

World Rowing Masters Regatta in Varese / North of Italy  5 - 8. September 2013

Loch Lomond Rowing Club Athletes (Eva, Martin and Sally who is a member of Loch Lomond, but registered under Reading for this event) performed well at the Masters Regatta.

The venue was stunning, an eight lane course on the beautiful Lake Varese with the Alps as the backdrop. It was very hot and the water conditions were near perfect with calm water.

This years entry was the biggest entry the Masters Regatta has ever seen with 3355 athletes, coming from

sally

633 clubs in 454 cities and covering 40 nations. There were more than 550 races with the winners being  awarded with a medal. Over 11,000 boat seats were occupied over the duration of the regatta with many rowers entering up to ten races.

How does the World Masters Regatta work? - Most of the races, divided into different age categories, have between 20 and 100 entries. It would be impossible to run the event as a traditional regatta with knock-out rounds. Therefore each event is sub-divided into a series of 8 boat, straight finals - so for example the ‘F’ single sculls had 14 ‘finals’ starting with the younger competitors moving through to the older ones. This means you are often racing people from the same ‘vintage year’ as yourself.

medals

Anyone can enter, from a novice to an ex-Olympian. The competition is very fierce. Some clubs ‘cherry pick’ their athletes from right across their country, and ‘international’ crews which pick the best rowers from more than one country. So competition with these crews for a club such as Loch Lomond is a tough task

Sally Pollock Morrice WON an amazing 8 races, 3 in her single in A, B and C, one in the 2-C with Ailie Ord, one in the 4xB, the 4+D, 8+A and the mixed F2x. Well Done.

Eva entered 10 races and WON 3 of them - 1Ex, 2Fx (with Jacky Darling from England) and WC4x (with Ailie Ord and Liz from Strathclyde Park and Gill Prescott from Durham).  In 6 races (1Dx, 4xD, 4xE, 2xD, 2xE, 2xFmixed) she was second and in the mixed 4xD quad third.

Martin raced very well in his single E and produced an outstanding performance in the quad D with Strathclyde Park and Aberdeen.

HAWCO INVERNESS SPRINT REGATTA 16 August 2013

On the unusually very windy and choppy waters of the Caledonian Canal some of our novice girls gained their first experience of racing and did not come away empty handed. In the WNov 2x Heather McKenzie and Robyn Whyte emerged as the winners with Heather also going on to win WNov 1x in challenging conditions in a club final against Kirsty Kay, the semi final for which unfortunately resulted in Hope Hastings tasting the waters of the canal. Hope was still a medal winner though as despite her coxing a quad for the first time and with a gusting tail wind she steered a winning course for the generation crew of Andy Summers, Lucy Bell, Rachel Gillies and Martin Claxton.  Lucy also went on to win WJu16 1x by a length. Andy and Donna Bell were sadly knocked out in the heats of the Mixed Vet 2x but Andy was able to claim a win with Martin in the O Vet 2x and in a club final beat Martin in the O Vet 1x.

This regatta is one of the premier events in the northern racing calendar. Racing takes place over 700 metres with the elite men’s and women’s events being competed over 1800 metres. This 1800 metre course requires that crews negotiate the historic Elvet Bridge at full race pace.

strathclyde regattaStrathclyde Regatta 27/28 April 2013
6 juniors and 2 veterans competed at Strathclyde Park Regatta, which was held over 2 days. The weather was reasonable on Saturday, though the wind started to pick up later in the day. Sunday was very windy so that they had to start to 1000m races at the 2000m start to avoid some of the white horses in the middle of the course.
Eva WON the WVet4x A-C in a composite with Gill (Durham) and Ailie and Liz (Strathclyde) and her Vet single.
Lucy did really well finishing 2nd in her heat and 5th in her final in the WJu15 1x.
The WJU15 2x with Heather and Rachel were 3rd in their heat and just missed out on a place in the finals.
Oliver and Finlay WON their heat in the OJU15 2x and finished 2nd in the final getting presented with a silver medal!
Oliver was braving the waves and was 3rd in the OJU15 singles heat.

nithsdale13th April 2013 - Nithsdale Regatta
Loch Lomond was well presented in Nithsdale / Dumfries and came away with some medals.  The weather was very kind to us with no rain!
Oliver in Finlay had a very close race in the OJU152x, but just managed to push their bow ball ahead of their opponents at the finish line and WON!! WELL DONE!
Eva was taking on the younger generation and she WON in the WR2 1x.
nithsdale
Eva and Ailie (SPRC)  took advantage of the new rule, that all men's events are now open events and raced in the OpenVet 2x, beating Martin's composite with Nithsdale in the semi finals and than beating Glasgow's MVets in the finals!
The girls had a very good race in their quad but were beaten by Talkin Tarn. They than split up into doubles with Lucy and Heather in one double and Rachel and Robyn in the other, but even they were close, they did not manage to progress to the final.
Oliver and Finlay both raced in singles in the OJU15. Finlay had an impressive win in the heats but lost in the semis. Oliver won his semi finals but unfortunately his opposition was too strong in the finals.
Everyone had a great time and the juniors even had some piggy back, wheelbarrow and three legged races and challenging SPRC vets.
